Birth defects (anomalies) scanning
It is a traumatic situation to have the fetus diagnosed with a birth defect. The parents will be in a dilemma, whether to continue or terminate the pregnancy. The solution depends upon the options for the correction of the birth defect detected and underlying reason . 60 – 70 % of the birth defects can be detected at the time of NT scan- that is between 11 to 14 weeks. The anomaly scan is usually done from 18 to 22 week , In this scan , we can able to detect 90% of birth defects . However, some anomalies develop at later pregnancy period. Hence. it is highly recommended to do at least three scans in each trimester of the pregnancy period.
